You're right. It does. I guess I've never seen it at this scale. I don't mind taking the abuse but it's not fair to everyone else working here.

[He makes some notes to himself. Literal notes, on his collection of post-its, and shoves them into the paperback novel he's been using to keep track of his information. "See if they censor television to. If they censor television, see if it gives a clue as to how the network was hijacked."]

You should mind taking the abuse. Anyone should.

[One of the things he'd found most intolerable about Connor in the beginning was that he completely ignored Hank's angry unease with him, like an emotionless sociopath who threw a fake, friendly face on. Seeing him care went a stretch to change Hank's opinions.]

I think 'the customer is always right' policy no longer stands when 'the customer (ie: asshole) is being inappropriate'.

I'm just saying most employers don't like patrons slapping the customers. Sort of makes it look like an unsafe environment for other patrons.

I'd find a good way to bring it up.

Sorry to hear that's the line of work you ended up with. Maybe they can shift you to being a stock boy. Do they have you on register? Or are you a stock boy?

Register. Stocking and unloading when needed.

Wish you could get put on stock duty. It sounds like it'd be easier. But usually managers like to take anyone with a relatively young face and all of their teeth and put them at the register, even if they fucking suck at it.

[Even if you're remotely attractive the service industry causes you to suffer.]

You might be right. I told them I don't want to do anything with customers so they lied about the storehouse jobs being filled.

Are businesses always this shady?

Being the shmuck in a dunking booth is more humane than working retail. It sets the lowest bar.

Where I'm from capitalism and war have a lot to do with each other. It might be the same here. I wouldn't count on it getting better, I'd just start looking hard for that bodyguard job.

Yeah. They found her parents pretty quick. She was fine.

[She didn't ask any bothersome questions that bothered the watchers. Which, apparently, even watch here to an exasperating (but not exactly surprising) level.]

They were grateful she got help.
