I'm looking for someone who's familiar with magic involving mind control. I know someone who needs help. He's free from her control now but something must have been left behind. He still gets sick and disoriented in the morning.

Let me know if you can help. He may not think there's a cure but I do.

[Sorry Seifer. He knows this is going to piss him off but this is important. ~~Never mind that he's put it off for a little too long himself.~~]

Like emplanting, masking, and redirecting memories, putting people to sleep, forcing them to recall memories they've hidden from themselves, reading minds. They're very complex, you know. You can do a lot with them if you know the proper spell, or at least the makings of one.

I'd like you to try it on me first. Can you find a memory if it's been affected by a magical being? I use summons called Guardian Forces in my world to fight. We think using them causes us to lose some of our memories because they take up room in our mind. But it can still be retrieved if someone else brings up the memory.

There's a lot about my childhood I don't remember.

Most likely, if it isn't missing, yes. [A pause.] You wouldn't happen to have one of the 'Guardian Forces' here, would you? Not that I need one, I'd simply be interested in studying one.

No. They were taken from me by the time I woke up here.

I don't think they're completely missing. I don't really know. I could still remember some memories when a friend brought up details.

You are aware, of course, that suppressing memories and mind control are very different things, yes?

[He scowls, some annoyance entering his tone.]

I'm not an idiot. [Except where he is.] I need to make sure you can do it first.

So untrusting.

[That's wise.]

And where would you have this demonstration take place?

The roof. [He's been picking that consistently for 'safest place to pass out']

I can meet anytime.

So demanding. [But there's only a brief pause before he adds-] I'll be there shortly.

[It's a perfectly reasonable response! But he's nodding before he realizes that can't be seen.]

Fine.

[It takes him a few minutes to get up there from his room near the lower floors. There's an empty relatively-unused stable taking up half the roof. Whether he or Loki gets there first, he's greeted with a frown and a:]

Identify yourself.

[He's not saying 'thefunone'!!]

[Loki, however, takes his time coming to the roof, if only because he isn't in any sort of huge hurry at the moment. When the door shuts behind him, he smiles at the boy's demand, placing a hand over his heart.]

With such affable grace it must be difficult to deny your requests. [But he inclines his head, bowing slightly at the shoulders in greeting.] Loki of Asgard.

[It's fine by him. He's no stranger to waiting and the view up here is pretty good, hovering above the noise and lights in a weird bubble of silence.

Ngh. Loki is one of those people who's full of themselves, isn't he? But he has an ability he needs, so he'll try to rein in the annoyance. (Spoilers: He looks annoyed anyway.)]

What's your name on the network?

You have an aversion even to the word fun?

[He sounds more amused than anything that Squall's refusal to say it.]

TheFunOne, obviously.

[Drily:] I don't know the meaning of the word.

[Still, he nods at the confirmation.]

How does your power work?

[Let's get down to business.]

[But onward, to other topics, yes?]

And which power is that? I have several, after all.

[He sighs.]

The one that's going to let you inside my head.

[Absolutely no sense of humor. He breathes a sigh before finally looking serious.]

Fine. Tell me more about how this memory suppression occurred. I'm not a mind-reader. I should be able to unweave the magicks if it was indeed magic that hid them from you. I can't find things that were intentionally removed.

[He has some very dry humor. They're just not reserved for when he's letting people go into his head.]

There are summons called Guardian Forces in my world. We call them GFs. We junction them if they agree to lend us their power, meaning they take up a place in our consciousness. It gives us strength and the ability to use para-magic. We can call on their destructive or healing powers in battle too. No one really knows the side effects of long-term GF use. There were suspicions memory loss is one of them but Garden always said that's a lie.

[He looks towards the building across from them.]

My friends and I think it's true. We forgot our childhood and each other even though we grew up in the same orphanage. But we remembered when Irvine reminded us. We think the GFs displaced the memories when we use them but we don't know for sure.

[So it's all theory, really.]

How quaint.

[The shortening of their titles to an acronym, he means, but the rest of Squall's tale catches his attention enough to garner real interest and he crosses his arms thoughtfully.]

Displaced but not forgotten completely, or you wouldn't be able to remember...and this is what you hope to remedy?

[It's easier to say than Guardian Force!! He doesn't know who started it though.]

Yes. Can you do it?

[It's up in the air if it counts as magical influence when its the GF's presence that caused it. And it's certainly not a great reference for Seifer's situation that he wants help with but it's worth a shot.]

I can certainly try. [Though he wasn't making any promises.] I'll need more information than that, though. Are you attempting to recall a memory from your childhood? Were you very small or more middling? To what may it pertain?

[Squall frowns as he considers it.]

.. Memories from my time in Garden would be nice. That's the mercenary school I go to. I was... probably five or six years old. I was learning how to use a gunblade. And there's a friend I'd like to remember, even though we weren't close back then.

[Finding displaced memories would be difficult. By design, they wouldn't be where they belonged, and he wasn't telepathic. He couldn't look directly, but instead send tendrils of a spell looking for specified memories where they should be. It may have been enough to spark a memory, though, if the mind knew where to find them.

He nodded, took a breath, committed the information provided to a thought he wrapped in magical energy, and reached out, pressing a palm to Squall's forehead.]

Brace yourself. This shouldn't hurt unless the memories are particularly painful.

[If nothing else, Loki's curiosity about this 'Garden' would be satisfied as the spell surged from his palm into Squall's mind, seeking the memories of the boy's past, of training as a child, to be replayed for both involved.]

[OOC: It's up to you whether that works or not. Loki's magic wouldn't be able to seek out memories that were moved, but only those that were locked away. So he might only remember things he's already remembered, but as though they'd just happened.]

[He stares back at Loki evenly at the placement of his hand and inhales slowly. He's still tense anyway but he's willing to see what he gets.

Which is apparently a memory he didn't technically lose so much as forget entirely (not that he can tell). His eyes widen to a flash of teeth. A lot of very sharp teeth on a very large t-rex-like creature. And the view is from someone who's far too small. Maybe seven years old, shaking hands holding up a sword seemingly attached to a gun. He's terrified but trying to stay firm despite being sprawled on the ground of a jungle-like area with a man-made path.

Squall yelps when the t-rexaur roars, tears gathering in his eyes. He's not going to cry. He's not going to cry. He's strong. He's not going to cry.

Suddenly, there's a loud yell and another figure jumping in from the side, slashing at the monster with his own variant of a gunblade. A youth with blond hair and a larger build even for an 8-year-old. There's a flash of an explosion with the strike and the youth dances on his feet when he lands.]

"What do you think you're doing, crybaby?"

[Squall wipes at his eyes and stands, pouting while attempting to look stoic.]

I'm training!

"To be t-rexaur food."

[The youth mocks. He seems comfortable in the monster's presence, enjoying the challenge. A small scuffle commences with Squall joining in to the best of his ability but it's more than evident they're no match. And thankfully the situation is resolved by two older teenagers in uniform striking the dinosaur down. And even that took a grueling fight.]

"Go home, Seifer. You're not even a level 5 trainee yet."

"Fuck off!"

[The teenage boy seems used to Seifer's presence and Seifer uncaring about his opinion. While the teenage girl tries to check on Squall and make sure he's okay.]

"Come on, let's get you out of the training center."

[The young Squall is sniffling a little, tears leaking from the corner of his eyes as he stubbornly wipes them away. He scrunches up his face, staring at Seifer's easy confidence and shakes his head.]

No! If Seifer can do it, I can too.

[Squall gasps and staggers back from Loki then. Some tears hovering at the edge of his own eyes before he claps the palm of his hand against his forehead. Eyes squeezed shut. Ugh.]

What the hell...? It feels like it just happened.
