??? (rise up, rise up)
[at approximately noon today, no matter what your phone settings, you hear a loud, harsh alarm tone, and the following broadcast. the voice is heavily distorted, difficult to tell its gender or whether it’s human, alien, or robot, though the intonation is much more variable than how the iterations speak. the screen of your phones during this broadcast displays a graphic of a red anatomical heart set against a plain, light grey background. there is no username listed.]
BEFORE THERE CAN BE ANY ACTION, A REVOLUTION MUST WAKE THE SLEEPING PEOPLE.
ARE YOU AWAKE YET?
OR DO YOU STILL BELIEVE THE LIES THEY’VE FED YOU?
WAKE UP! WAKE UP!
LISTEN TO THE HEART.
[the broadcast ends with the same braying tone, and the screen cuts to black. there will be no responses from the poster, and within fifteen minutes, the admins have wiped the message from the network. sure hope some intrepid soul finds a way to download and store the message offline ...
on an ooc note: feel free to use this post as a place to comment around, discuss wtf just happened with your comrades, jump into action threads, etc.!]

wow it took them a long time to take that down
Anonymous is a group of 'hacktivists' that associate almost exclusively over the internet. Basically they pick an opponent and use their collective programming skills to cause as much harm as they can. If they have to appear where people can see them they like to use voice distortion devices and the same masks as the guy in V for Vendetta.
[ Heck no she doesn't know it's based on a comic. ]
They're anti-government like in the movie, but V instigated a revolution against fascist rule and Anonymous basically just gangs up on whoever they feel like at the time. They've done some good, but they've also done some real bad.
1984 by George Orwell is a common assigned reading in high school and is pretty much the same idea but more believable and way less about terrorism for personal revenge.

[Neither does he, sadly.]
So they're a bunch of idiots causing trouble while pretending to do good. [Ouch, that's a little familiar.] I feel like I'm missing out on all these references.

If you find a video rental place you'll have to see if they have them. It makes more sense in context than out
you're really only missing one movie, one book, and the concept of hacking

Yeah I'll try to put that on my list. If they have media from your world here at all that is.
Oh. So just all the major points? No big deal.

and hacking is kind of a mystery regardless

Is it? I'll take your word for it. Information gathering wasn't my specialty.
