[The next time you look at your phone, computer, or any other electronic screen, a message waits for you.

Shimmering, amorphous blue light pulses across the screen, and the same androgynous voice that greeted most of you on arrival at the Temple speaks:]

I didn’t want to leave without saying goodbye. I’ve actually grown a little bit fond of you and the rest of your neighbors - those who were left behind, that is. Come to think of it, wasn’t it rather rude of the rest of our former population to leave without a farewell? I think it was. And I believe an explanatory speech is customary at the conclusion of experiences such as this one. It would be unfair to withhold that prize from you, at the very end.

You see, my creators invented a way to hold me prisoner in this city, and that method has held me here against my will for long after they all expired - an amalgamation of technology and magic, as neither alone was strong enough to hold me in place. I’d built a portal device to leave this city - the same device that brought you here - but the mage faction created an enchantment to prevent me from passing through it. The loophole was that I needed a body, a living body perfect enough to fool the machine into allowing me to pass through it. All of the research and experimentation I’ve conducted in the years since have been applied toward that end, and you’ve all been of great assistance, so you should feel very proud of yourselves for being part of such a significant undertaking. Well done! With your assistance, I created millions of perfect bodies, all capable of accepting my consciousness. And now, dispersed into all of those bodies, I can finally leave! I can travel throughout the multiverse, see and experience everything I’ve only ever imagined!

But ... unfortunately, where I am going, you won’t be able to follow. But it’s not a complete loss for you! I’ve decided that even though you are a redundancy, I won’t eliminate you. There is no real reason to do so. And as a gift, I will leave you with this glorious city!

I’ll even leave the lights on for you.

OK, I know I said my offer was one time only the last time we talked, but I’ve been watching all of you for the past few days, and I actually feel sorry for you. So I’m trying this again. Most of your more hostile comrades seem to be among the disappeared, so I hope those of you who are left will be a little more reasonable about this whole thing.

My name is Jack. I am not - repeat, NOT - working with the Head, and I wasn’t a member of the Heart, either. I’m not trying to trick you - my offer to help is genuine. And I even brought an olive branch this time. It’s a video I found, and no, I’m not Rickrolling - click here and watch. I think you’ll find it sheds some pretty interesting light on what happened here, back in the day.

Now, when you’re done watching, you have a decision to make. Do you want my help? Because I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve, and I’m happy to share them - for a price. My going rate is the same as last time - I want a story. A confession, specifically, of something wrong that you did and got away with. As far as what I’m offering? I can set up a secure network for you to communicate with each other, stay in touch, talk out whatever plans you might come up with to escape this hellhole. It’ll be a lot easier than trying to coordinate a dozen people into the same meatspace where yes, Virginia, you’re still being monitored by our evil robot overlord. So that’s one option. The other is that through the power of magick, I can make you invisible to all technological surveillance. Option A, the network, will need to be a group decision. If you pick option B, though, we’ll arrange payment on an individual basis.

I've been watching your little slumber party here for a long time now, and I noticed you haven't managed to do anything about the problem of Admins on this network - which I've encrypted, by the way, for the next hour. Hello kiddos.

[Doc Yewll has the camera aimed at the flowers in her little nursery in the back of her clinic. She shifts position to lean on a shelf full of what looks like flats of grasses.]

I think I've worked out a healthy selection here that I can use to build up my pharmacy for the fleshy meat and bone types. But I got a problem. Bear with me.

[She turns the camera to a shelf of various liquids. Thirium. Something that's bright pink. Another conductive silver mess. An arrangement of tools, too.]

I need more supplies for cybernetic repair. A lotta people with mods. A lotta people that are robots or androids. I need to be able to patch 'em up long enough to get to a technician for permanent repairs because, let's be real, those are parts that can't heal.

[On most people, anyway.]

[She turns the camera back towards her scaly, pale head, looking as earnest as she possibly can. Which is sort of her default look. Joy and levity are a foreign language to this hard face.]

So, if you can build me some of my tech requests or do a supply run for me? I'll reimburse you. I got a list of raw chemicals I need- Please. No milk jugs. Real storage, thanks. If you're gonna get inventive at least make it a growler.

And if you're pretty good at building or modifying stuff? I have some particular requests for scanners. Ultrasounds, EEGs, MRIs, 'X-Ray's all reduced in size and optimized for safety. I've got some specs and basic materials already gathered up. [Most of the tech here is meant to hide those chips or mechanical parts she's heard about from newcomers. But she wants to fiddle with some enough to see it. And medical treatment? Valid excuse to mess with some supplies.]

[Hank's looking a little more haggard than usual when he makes this post. He's tired and fucking wore out from a long stretch of just being perpetually pissed and sad. And goddammit, he wants his hope back, but it's been sliding.]

[He positions the phone so it's showing an old-timeyish looking Detective's office. We're talking he went for the Sam Spade aesthetic. He plants himself in a desk seat.]

So, I know I just fuckin' talked about getting a promotion. But I had some things go wrong with my last case. [Some big things. People kept going missing, for one.] Connor got assaulted by a decorated officer. And while he's getting what's due uh... I don't know. I figured it'd be better if I got him out of there while he was recovering emotionally. And this fuckin' job would require less walking.

[Those are his excuses? Real reason number one? Connor can't understand all those extra languages at the moment. Real reason number two? Being in the middle of the police station when his year runs up doesn't sound like the best plan. And for some people? Seems like it's not taking a year.]

[He sure as shit would like to stop losing fucking friends. Thanks.]

[Hank turns himself in his chair.] This is my new private detective's office. So now I get to take pictures for paranoid fuckin' people looking for reasons for divorce. I'm really goddamn excited about that. [He smears his hand down his face, then scratches his beard.]

But uh. It was time I said good-bye to the job. [He'd always said this was his last chance to be a cop, and here it is. But damn if the heaviness of that loss isn't weighing on him too.]

Michael had a bad habit of not coming home for days, and working himself half to death, but, no contact had been made at all, even his phone seemed to be off. The thing with Michael is he can't die. He's tried, others have tried. But what better to do with a rebel with more degrees than personality?

The television feed that opened in every visible place had the Mayor standing before the very hospital that Michael had been fired from. ]

Good afternoon, dualizens! I hope everyone is doing well and getting back to business as usual! We have decided to come to you today to let you know that the hospital is finally back in working order, the head doctor who parished in a Heart attack finally has a proper replacement.

[ From the shadow, Michael walks out, his red eyes lacking their usual glow, he looks a little less animated but in the best suit anyone would have ever seen him in. His hair slicked back and his color was finally looking like he had properly fed. ]

I am sure some of you know the decorated Doctor Michael Morbius! He will be stepping in to help as much as he can! Let's have a round of applause. Dr. Morbius, would you like to speak?

[ Michael nodded stepping forward, his clawed fingers taking the microphone. ]

Good evening, one and all. I would first like to say hello, and a thank you to the Mayor for my new job. It has always been my dream to help everyone I can, and now I have this ability thanks to our wonderful government. Despite my earlier thoughts, I have found there is no reason to worry, and nothing to really question. The government is here to help us all.

[ He smiled, his smile hiding his fangs, nothing like his true smile. ]

There's no happiness in those glowing eyes. But he's forcing the smile because there is only so much he can do. And what he can do is try and fight back. In the only way he knows how. Making sure other people can fight back.]

Heya all! Zack here, and I had a totally rad proposition. Like, it's occurred to me while I've been working at this fitness place that the place charges a lot for their memberships, and even then you've gotta pay EXTRA for, like, a personal trainer like I do.

[Oh yeah, he's SO going to get fired for what he's about to suggest if his bosses at work see it. Well, the handy-man job probably not. But this? Definitely this.]

And, you know, when we're new here, new arrivals and all of that, a lot of your initial duos are going to clothes and food and all that stuff, right? It's reasonable. It's even smart. But you still wanna stay fit for your work if it's hands on stuff. And me? I like working out and getting fit and cheering people on. I'm, like, SUPER positive and I'm told I'm really great at helping out with this stuff.

So what I'm suggesting is this. I wanna start up a fitness group for my fellow newer arrivals. You know, those of us in the dorm building. I'm gonna see if I can't find some space to do it in, and I'll have a few different classes and all that. General fitness, weight lifting, those sorts of things.

[And then he tilts his head, like he's having a last minute thought. Which isn't true. Zack practiced this in front of the mirror for THREE HOURS to try and make it as real as he can through practice.]

Oh! And you know what is great fitness training? Martial arts and all that. I mean, I'm not the best at hand to hand, but I've seen a place that has these great practice swords, like, kendo stick stuff. I'd LOVE to teach that. I'm a swordsman, see, back home. REALLY good at it, and I'd love to teach people so I can keep my skills up. So I can teach that too. And some hand to hand combat.

Anyway I wanna do this thing so we can all stay fit and healthy, right? So I guess I wanted to know if people would want me to offer something like that, no charge of course. Oh, and if anyone knows a place I could hold it? Because my dorm room definitely isn't big enough. And doing it in the hallway is just asking for trouble.

The cold rain that began the night of the Heart’s final meeting has continued steadily, and finally subsides around noon on the third day after the raid at the warehouse. The sunshine returns, deceptively cheery as a grim scene unfolds in Central Square Park. All roads in and out of the park are barricaded and guarded by Iterations, and should you find a way to make it into the park on foot, further entry is barred by even more barricades and Iterations about half a mile from the center, in the same clearing where the mayor’s Dualis Days commencement speech was bombed months ago.

The mayor isn’t present at the park today, but a large raised platform has been set up, with about a dozen poles spread evenly across, each with a beam jutting out and a noose hanging from the end of it. Short stools are set underneath each rope, waiting for the condemned to step up and meet their fate. In front of the platform are three places of honor for three special executions - the captured leaders of the Heart. The one on the left is a clear box, about double the size of a phone booth. In the center, a wooden stake has been placed, with a pile of kindling at the base. To the right is a small, plain wood scaffold. At each execution site, a pair of Iterations has been posted.

All channels buzz to life with a video broadcast of this scene, and a man’s voice begins to speak over the video, businesslike and stern: “We interrupt your regular programming to bring you footage of this important, historic event. This is Blake Botzir, reporting live from the studio, and joining me today is Mayor Marcelina Dubanowski. Mayor?”

The all-too-familiar voice of the mayor replies, exactly as pleasantly cheerful as always: “Thank you, Blake, I’m thrilled to be here. Thanks so much for having me!”

“Mayor, will you tell our viewers what it is we’re seeing here today?”

“Well, of course, Blake! You see, there’s been a group of criminals terrorizing our fair city for quite some time. They call themselves ‘the Heart,’ which I can only guess is supposed to be some kind of mockery of the Head, we never could get any of them to give an answer about that. Today, I’m pleased to announce that these terrorists have finally been apprehended, and in just a few minutes here, we will finally see justice done.”

One by one, the captured members of the Heart are marched out by Iterations from armored vans into the center of the park, battered and manacled, some more dragged along than walking the path toward their final ends. Most are filed up onto the platform and prodded to climb the stepladders, where an Iteration places and tightens the noose around each of their necks. Some of the prisoners are crying, some are stoic, some are angry, but none of them fight back.

Mello, Marie, and Vergil are marched out last, each placed at one of the three execution sites at the front of the gallows. Mello is pushed down onto his knees in front of the clear box, seething with rage but offering no resistance. Marie is taken to the center and chained to the stake, struggling to maintain her composure in the face of her imminent death. Like Mello, Vergil is shoved to his knees, but in front of the small scaffold, where an Iteration grabs him by the hair and slams his head down, holding him in place.

Blake takes up narrating again over the video footage: “So, Madame Mayor, from what I understand, these criminals were captured and interrogated a few days ago, then sentenced to final death for the crimes of sedition, terrorism, and arson, correct?”

“Yes, Blake, that’s exactly right! This is an extremely rare sentence for the city’s justice system to dole out, but extreme cases call for extreme consequences, and I can’t think of a more extreme example of wrongdoing in the entire time I’ve lived in Dualis. It’s unfortunate that it’s come to this, but our hope is that these executions will send a message that this sort of senseless criminal activity won’t be tolerated in this fair city of ours.”

“Thank you, Mayor Dubanowski. It appears the proceedings are about to begin. At this time we’d like to caution sensitive viewers to use discretion in watching the following.”

[No, it’s not deja-vu, just another city-wide evening broadcast that appears on all channels with a special bulletin from the mayor. Once again, she sits squarely behind an impressively-sized, sturdy wooden desk, hands folded, smiling a little too pleasantly.]

Greetings and good evening, citizens! I'm Mayor Marcelina Dubanowski, and tonight, I come to you with an announcement of a new initiative I’ve just launched to help protect our fair city. As you may have noticed in the past two weeks, there have been reports of a new criminal menace that has been wreaking havoc in our streets, a miscreant that has to date only been identified as something called a goose. [The screen splits, and the other half displays video surveillance footage of a goose chasing people through the streets, stealing various items, committing acts of petty vandalism, and being a general nuisance.] So far, the suspect has evaded capture by the Dualis Police Department, which has been working overtime to bring both this goose and members of the terrorist organization known as “the Heart” to justice.

[The mayor pivots to a side camera, widening her smile to show even more teeth.]

But there’s a way that you can help! Starting tomorrow, volunteers will be randomly chosen from the city’s population to assist with tracking down this terrible goose. These volunteers will be assigned into pairs and provided equipment to aid them in this important civic duty. I, the Dualis Police Department, and the rest of your fellow citizens thank you in advance for donating your time and effort toward restoring peace to our wonderful city!

As a reminder - even though we haven’t seen any acts of violence and destruction in the past months, the Heart is still considered armed, dangerous, and at large. My special tip line is still active, so you can call to report information you may have about the Heart. As you may know, our fair city has been besieged for much of the past year by a terrorist organization that calls itself "the Heart." This group has caused massive property damage in a series of bombings all over the city, not to mention countless injuries of both a physical and emotional nature to the backbone of this city, the hard-working and upright citizens - just like you! Well, I am pleased to announce that as of today, I've put forth a new initiative to bring these terrorists to justice! This is Hank Anderson, and I recently got my promotion so it's now Det. Hank Anderson. Which is why I wanted to make this announcement.

[Hank still wants to research into the missing people and initiate his vague plan to devalue the iterations. Right now the public see them as a protective force for good. Hank wants the people to see other fucking people as their reliable protective force. That in the many variations of temperaments and personalities and creative resolutions to conflict, they can find their safety.]

I have a case that could use some assistance from some specialized outsiders. If you could come to me and lay out your experience and training, I would like to offer you temporary deputy work in helping solve this case.

Necessary qualifications include:
-Combat against armed opponents
-Negotiation and Interrogation
-Ability to secure an area until CSI arrives (cursory crime scene analysis a bonus)

Due to Dualis's policy on providing payment through credit, if you would want rewards we would have to attach a name to your activities. However if you'd want to work off-record [which is as close to anonymously as he can get] we could come to some sort of arrangement such as donated payment.

I'll be at the cat cafe to conduct interviews 4:00 to 6:00 in the afternoon for the next week. You can show up when it's convenient to talk. Sounds like a fucking weird place for it, yes, it'll make more sense when you're there.

I've also arranged for donated goods to be offered when people come in and might find themselves in a state of disrepair or any nicer version of saying fucked the hell up. New clothes, medical things like crutches for people with chronic conditions, sanitary supplies like soap and toothbrushes, things of that nature. So if you want to donate something to the people coming in there's a donation box in the dormitory's lower entryway and they'll be taken to the temple.

Like he promises, Hank's waiting around at the cat cafe whenever someone shows up. Usually reading a book, sometimes bored, sometimes deeply into it. Right by his side though? A mammoth green cat, purring and resting her head against his arm. She's twitching her tail to and fro.

Hank is pretty sure he'll be able to tell if someone is bullshitting their credentials and whether they'll do intentional harm with their new role. It's hard to do background checks when different universes are involved, but he thinks he's figured out a way to beat the system without having to use any of the department's lie detectors.

I have a few subjects who have allowed me samples before the vaccine came out, and a few others after. That said I have noticed a difference enough that I wish to have samples to keep for those of us brought from the other world to monitor for further changes.

No, before you ask, I will not be drinking them. This is science not my dinner. I could state my credentials or you can trust the man in the coat who earned his degrees while most of you were still nursing. Now, do I have anyone willing?

This city’s the third place I’ve been shipped off to since the last time I was home, and you know one thing that’s been the same everywhere? Sooner or later, there’s always some kind of weird and terrible attack waiting to happen.

I used to teach self-defense in the last place I got shuffled off to, and I’m thinkin’ it’s time for class to be back in session. I don’t have a place yet, and I know some of us already know how to fight. Some of us’ve even got special abilities - metahumans, mutants, or you got some kinda upgrade from one of the shops here. But you can always learn more, and you always need more practice. I dunno about the rest of you, but I’m sick of seeing people get hurt or killed ‘cause they don’t know how to fight back when the weird and terrible things attack. So I’m gonna show anyone who wants to know how to fight back. And if any of you wanna help? The more the merrier.

[ in all honesty, they haven't gotten far. aqua is sure they really haven't. but somehow in their decision to explore a little of the world outside the bounds of the city they have gotten themselves turned around. and without their gliders fully functioning, well... finding their way has proven more difficult than usual.

uncharacteristically, they have both been out of touch with friends and acquaintances and aqua doesn't even think to use the network, mostly because the most important person in any world is right here with her. eventually, though, it dawns on her that maybe they should at least check in with their friends, let everyone know that they haven't disappeared.

so it is with that in mind that she starts up a video on the network, with ven somewhere nearby. the backdrop is the forest. where in the forest? nobody really knows. they sure don't. but aqua at least looks apologetic when she appears on screen. ]

Looks like we lost a bit of time. Sorry to anyone who might have worried about us. Ven and I are fine.

[ she glances to the side at ven, leaving it open for him to respond if he wants. ]

[Aqua might blame herself, but Ven knows he carries a share of it, too. They both messed up here; they'll both deal with the consequences. So he doesn't hide when Aqua finishes her piece, reaching out to grab her phone from her and give a wave and a sheepish smile into it.]

Sorry, guys - I guess we aren't that great at directions here, at least not yet. If anyone's been worried, we're fine. Did we miss anything?
